In the grand scheme of things, our place in history is brief yet huge.

Cosmic Voyage IMAX has an excellent simulation/demonstration of the power of exponential numbers. Morgan Freedman's narration starts with a 1 meter circle, a hoola hoop, and then keeps expanding 10 times the previous size. 13 steps later we pass our solar system. 23 steps out and we are at the outer limits of space. Then, WHAM! the viewer gets to travel warp speed back to Earth, to the Netherlands, a river bed, and a drop of water. And now it’s magnification times 10 -- from single cell organisms, to their DNA, to individual atoms comprised of protons and quarks...
